NALOX-ZONE

The Nalox-ZONE Program aims to support both safety and harm reduction in communities across the state of Wisconsin.

Opioids continue to be the main cause of drug overdose deaths in the United States, including Wisconsin. Despite progress in addressing the opioid epidemic over the past few years, the number of reported suspected opioid overdoses have been increasing in Wisconsin.

Naloxone, a specific, high affinity opioid antagonist has been used for more than four decades, to treat suspected opioid overdoses. It is used in emergency department settings and by first responders such as emergency medical technicians and law enforcement. It can additionally be purchased through a prescription.

There are also options to obtain free naloxone in the community through various recovery community organizations and through Wisconsin Voices for Recovery’s Nalox-ZONE Program. Through this program we are able to provide free naloxone upon request, and through installation of Nalox-ZONE boxes throughout the community which allows free, community-based access to naloxone, which is especially important in emergency situations where an overdose is occurring. We also provide free, naloxone administration training.

The mission of our Nalox-ZONE Program is to increase access to naloxone by distributing as many Nalox-ZONE boxes as possible across Wisconsin, supporting both safety and harm reduction efforts to save lives and prevent fatalities as a result of opioid overdoses. These boxes are currently able to be provided for FREE.

What is a Nalox-ZONE box?

A Nalox-ZONE box is a type of rescue kit that is used to prevent fatality from an opioid overdose. Each box contains 2 doses of naloxone nasal spray, a breathing barrier (if CPR is needed), instructions on how to administer naloxone nasal spray (in Spanish and English), and box placement sites will often include brochures inside the box for local recovery-based resources.

Our program specialists have the ability to remotely track box access to ensure the boxes are stocked in a timely manner and to collect data on the number of units of naloxone dispensed at each box site.

Nalox-ZONE boxes can be placed in almost any location indoors (e.g., food pantries, homeless shelters, libraries, pharmacies, grocery stores, gas stations, hotels, jails, schools/colleges, treatment centers, etc.)

We have partnered with organizations and businesses within the following counties:  Dane, Dodge, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Winnebago, and Wood Counties and continue to expand.

To find out more about our program or request a box installation, please email us at:  naloxzone@fammed.wisc.edu.

The Nalox-ZONE box provided by Wisconsin Voices for Recovery includes doses of the opioid reversal drug Narcan, an emergency breathing apparatus and literature about treatment options.
